During 2016 the members of the City of Tonawanda Professional Firefighters Local 859 responded to a total of 2,657 emergency calls. Call volume broke down as follows: 30 Working Fires, 101 Alarm of Fire, 1,515 Emergency Medical Calls, 535 of which required the Advance Life Support that we continue to provide, 865 Still Alarm, 144 false calls, and 2 other. In addition to the emergency requests, members completed 3229 hours of training, Fire Code violations in the local businesses, requests for assistance with smoke and carbon monoxide detector installation, conducted monthly blood pressure checks at the Senior Services Center, taught fire safety and prevention to the local elementary and middle schools, Co-Sponsored the Annual Fire Department Open House, provided Fire station tours and participated in numerous other community educational events. During the past year we had five members retire: FF. Richard Schroeder 1/16, Assistant Chief Joe Bacon 4/16, FF Tim Newman 7/16, Captain Robert Hassett and Assistant Chief Mike Young 10/16. These retirements represent a loss of over 125 years of experience in our Department. The Department was able to add four new members in February: Eric Dolpp, Mike Cornett, Josh Page and Brandon McGuire. Even with these additions the Department is currently still two members short of our traditional staffing levels and we continue to work with the City to find ways to add this much needed manpower. Every year the Members of IAFF Local 859 contribute, fundraise and then donate over $20,000 to both local and national charities, and 2016 was no different. Our major charities and amounts for 2016 are: MDA $17,500 these funds are raised during our two annual boot drive events.
